Tabula Rasa

Elam School of Fine Arts, National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries, Postgraduate Diploma of Fine Arts, Tāmaki Makaurau

In this piece I am to construct a world where the viewer experiences Bhatta Nayaka’s concept of rasa - a state of total absorption. Exploring the theme of transience, laced within beeswax is the explicit idea of memory. Wax has the inherent ability to change forms, however in this arrangment it is suspended, fixed only for a moment in time. The juxtaposition of inner world patterns and materials in the external world highlight the interaction between the self and its surroundings, linking memory and imagination. I consider questions surrounding common artistic intentions of seeking permanence through art making.
